How long have you known you’re trans?
i came out as non-binary in May 2020. I’d been experiencing acute gender dysphoria (discomfort in my body due to feeling like it didn’t match up with how I felt) since 2018-2019, but there were hints as far back as middle school that I wasn’t completely comfortable with the gender I was assigned at birth.
What’s the difference between being non-binary and transgender?
someone who is transgender (or “trans”) doesn’t identify with their assigned gender at birth. for instance, I am AFAB (assigned female at birth) but do not identify with that label, so I am transgender.
someone who is non-binary (or “enby”) is someone who does not feel that they fit within the binary gender labels of “male” and “female.” because these people do not identify with their assigned gender at birth, they are also considered transgender.
both transgender and non-binary are umbrella terms used to describe multiple labels and identities.
non-binary is a catch-all terms for anyone who feels that they fit someone in between, beyond, or within multiple genders. examples of labels that fall under the category of non-binary are: genderfluid, bigender, and agender.
for those wondering more, a glossary of LGBTQ+ labels/identities/terms can be found here!
Are you on testosterone/hormone replacement therapy (HRT)?
yes! I started taking masculinizing hormone therapy (which means I’m taking testosterone in order to masculinize my features) in January 2021 through Planned Parenthood. I highly recommend looking into their HRT program as it is incredibly accessible, affordable, and safe.
more info on Planned Parenthood’s HRT options can be found here. (This link takes you to info on PP’s Illinois options but the general info is the same and from there that page allows you to schedule an appointment.)
I also recommend downloading the GoodRX app so you can find the most affordable pharmacy and coupons for the HRT you’re prescribed.
Are you getting any gender-affirming surgeries?
I got top surgery in December 2021! I am continuing HRT for the foreseeable future, so if you would like to donate to that cause, you can do so here!
